Okilly Dokilly say “most of our songs are direct Ned quotes”

Ok you can stop what you’re doing now; we’ve found the perfect way to cap off your working week. Lull yourself into the mood with the world’s first and only Ned Flanders-themed metal band: Okilly Dokilly. This works on so many levels, and there’s really not much else to say, so we’re just going to paraphrase the guys at Music Feeds: “Themed metal bands can be a joy to behold, especially when they’re drenched in pop culture. Take, for example, the newly-formed Phoenix, Arizona outfit Okilly Dokilly, who have combined the raw power of hardcore metal with the raw masculinity of The Simpsons‘ church-going neighbourino, Ned Flanders.

Berlin is better; Vice rubs club-culture metropolis in your face for Jagermeister documentary titled ‘Australians In Berlin’

Jagermeister has teamed up with Vice for a branded content piece that follows the lives of four electronic music artists who’ve relocated to Berlin, casting the spotlight on the magnetic pull of its clubbing-culture and vast disparities in nightlife-stamina (where parties regularly run for longer than 24 hours). Kate Miller, Tornado Wallace, Baron Castle and Fantastic Man each paint Berlin as a compelling Eden for techno-evangelists joining a steady stream of notoriously well-travelled Aussie expats who have repudiated their musical origins and packed their bags for Germany’s capital over the last decade (eg: Clan Analogue’s Deepchild and Melbourne-born Christian Vance).

Will.i.am plays giant Guitar Hero on a race track using a Lexus to trigger sounds; because everyone loves fist-pumping to colourful lasers

While Holden was busy the other week wantonly battling drones against the new Astra in what can only be described as an overly-slick and brightly-illuminated synchronised dance-off, stateside Lexus took light fanfare to the next level with a life-size Guitar Hero rendition played out on a race track where precision drivers trigger the musical notes to Will.i.am’s pumping remix of his track #thatPOWER, with the car activating sound as it passes through hundreds of motion and sound-sensitive lights. “It’s basically like a giant laser harp with cars instead of fingers” said Barnaby Steel, Marshmallow Laser Feast’s creative director.

Listen to the sound of space!

NASA has busied itself over the last few years recording sound in the virtual vacuum of space (in the form of electromagnetic vibrations that pulsate in similar wavelengths) and the results are breathtakingly beautiful, or absolutely terrifying – you decide. Although popular belief is that there’s no sound in space, NASA has attached specially designed instruments to its space probes to capture within the normal range of human hearing what is the most exquisitely haunting acoustic pallet. 4 weeks into Apple Music’s launch and its arrival is short on revolutionary industry-changing impact

Which raises some interesting questions about the mainstream appeal of streaming, and its price point. With Apple Music reportedly hitting 10 million users ‘opting in’ to the 3-month free trial, it will be interesting to see how many will translate into paying subscribers. Meanwhile the rivalry between Spotify and Apple continues to intensify, with the former well ahead having announced in May this year that it had amassed 75 million users, 20 million of which are paying subscribers. Spotify’s recent pairing with Beatport for a content distribution deal around curated content (which is one of Apple Music’s biggest draw-cards) suggests the gloves are far from off.

David Jones collaborates with Daniel Johns for world-first fashion shoot captured by musical instruments

National department store chain and fashion powerhouse David Jones has collaborated with local musician and former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns to create a truly innovative music video/fashion shoot hybrid titled ‘Shot By Sound’ where the cameras are sonically-triggered by the band’s instruments. It’s an exciting first-of-its-kind campaign and concept, seeing the brand ditch the traditional TVC and instead setting up 42 customised DSLR cameras in a giant studio to capture the models as sound from each instrument of the live performance reached a set threshold and triggered a photo. Amazing!
